What’s the most beautiful holiday you had when you were a child? On Christmas, my sister and I always visit my grandmother’s house.
Her house was always magical to us. One particular Christmas, my cousin, sister and I all got several new Barbie dolls. We spent the evening having our dolls “ice skating” underneath the beautifully lit Christmas tree. It was topped off with Nat King Cole and Motown Christmas records playing in the background. What was your favorite toy? My favorite toy as a kid was my Jem doll from the cartoon Jem and the Holograms. She had a purple sparkly dress and huge pink high heels. Were you good at school? Yes, I was good in school. However, I wasn’t extremely motivated. I did just enough studying to get good grades.
Were you neat or messy? I was really neat and organized at school (clean desk, organized locker). A little messy at home. Hey, home is where you are supposed to relax. A few dolls, clothes, books, and games not put away isn’t a huge deal. Were you lively or thoughtful? I’m an introvert and have always been introverted, even as a kid. I much prefer staying with my own thoughts. What did you use to draw? Girls in fashionable (or what I thought fashionable) clothes were the things I used to draw. I really haven’t strayed from that category.
What did you want to become in the future? I wanted to be a movie special effects artist. Building the puppets, painting the props, doing all of the practical effects work. As movie effects started heading more towards computer and away from the hands-on effects, I lost interest in that dream. What was your favorite item of clothing, the one you always wanted to wear? My MC Hammer t-shirt has a lot of wear and tear. In fact, I think I still have that shirt hiding somewhere in my closet. It’s at least 20 years old.
What was the food you used to hate most? Hamburgers were disgusting to me, mainly because the first burger I tasted was the school cafeteria’s version (yuck!) I love hamburgers now, but those school burgers still give me nightmares. If you could go back in time when you were a child, what “modern” game would you like to have fun with? We would be the ultimate game to take back in time. My siblings, cousins and I would spend all day playing and laughing and arguing over Smash Bros Brawl.
In your opinion, what’s missing today in the world of children? I think board games are missing from children’s activities. They can play most of the online now. But, it doesn’t replace the pleasure of sitting around a game with your friends having fun on a rainy day. Whether it’s daring your friend to call her crush and sing him a funny song (Girl Talk). Buying up every item possible in a mall (Mall Madness) or laughing at the friend that got stuck with 8 children (The Game of Life). The simple pleasures of board games is something that kids really should experience.
