Little words with Rogier Martens

LittleWord Rogier

Rogier Martens (1978) is an Utrecht based designer from the Netherlands. Martens prefers objects with an unmistakable identity. In his designs he actively searches for interaction with the user, to define the needs of the end user he always supports his designs by research.

This open approach leads to special designs with great potential to use them. His work is international known and selected in countries such as Germany, Denmark, Italy, China and the USA. Do you remember a special gift you received when you were a child? Lego. What’s the most beautiful holiday you had when you were a child? We use to go to the Alps in Summer. I really liked the outdoors. What was your favourite toy? Lego. Were you good at school? I never was a good student, I always wanted to do my own thing. Were you neat or messy? I would say messy. Were you lively or thoughtful? Both. What did you use to draw? Animals, especially birds. What did you want to become in the future? In comparison to many of my friends, I never knew what I wanted to be when I grew up and never had a problem with it. What was your favourite item of clothing, the one you always wanted to wear? New sneakers for running.

Did you prefer cowboys or Indians? Neither. Which was the worst prank you played or suffered? Creating all kind of smoke bombs with friends. What was the food you used to hate most? Fish. Now I really love it. What’s the first lie you told? Yes, I will be home on time! Do you remember a dirty word you used to say? No. If you could go back in time when you were a child, what “modern” game would you like to have fun with? I really loved the “Oldschool Lego blocks”. I love the fact that you can build endlessly. I never played with the built objects. I just liked to build over and over again. What’s the game you play (would like to play) with your son? Go outdoor and be active!

What movie or cartoon would you like to see (have seen) with your son? Earth, I want to show the beauty of the world. Which book did you give him (would you like to give to him)? Roald Dahl’s “The BFG”. Which item would you like to leave to your child? No item / just the ways and possibility to create his own life. In your opinion, what’s missing today in the world of children? Imagination and activity. Don’t be afraid to hurt yourself and don’t be afraid to fail. Do you have a project for the little ones in mind or have you already carried out one for them? Yes, yes! For a new gallery in New York we created a new object. I can’t tell much about it at this time, but it will be surprising and fast. It will be shown for the first time at the opening in NY September.
