Little words with Ilaria Rodella

Design Little Words Rodella

Do you remember a special gift you received when you were a child? A really ugly pyggy bank.

What’s the most beautiful holiday you had when you were a child? A week at Isola d’Elba with my parents before my brother’s birth: not beacause of my brother, but because I realised something would have been changed for ever since then. What was your favorite toy? Pretend to be in other worlds.

Were you good at school? I was good. Were you neat or messy? Really messy (like now). Were you lively or thoughtful? Lively. What did you use to draw? Clouds. What did you want to become in the future? Many things… like now. What was your favorite item of clothing, the one you always wanted to wear? I think I didn’t care too much, because I don’t remember.

Did you prefer cowboys or Indians? Cowboys. Which was the worst  prank you played or suffered? I gave to my brother some broth made with some grass taken from our garden. His tounge and face turned swollen and red. What was your recurring whim? I didn’t want to sleep by myself… but who wants to sleep alone?! How did you first graze your knee? Running on the scale.

What was the food you used to hate most? Banana, fennel and celery. What’s the first lie you told? I said I was to my friend’s house, while we were in some other places. Do you remember a dirty word you used to say? I asked to my dad the meaning of «puttana» and «scopare»… his face turned red. But I don’t remember other dirty words that I use to say. If you could go back in time when you were a child, what “modern” game would you like to have fun with? Some really funny apps: there are some that are wonderful!

What‘s the game you play (would like to play) with your son? Swithing our roles, pretending to be them and viceversa. What movie or cartoon would you like to see (have seen) with your son? Peter Pan, My Neighbor Totoro, Azul and Asmar, Kiki’s Delivery Service… and Coco that is amazing! So many! Which book did you give him (would you like to give to him)? Pippi Longstocking, Mary Poppins, all Roald Dahl’s, all Bianca Pitzorno’s, Bruno Munari’s books… but there are so many others!

Which item would you like to leave to your child? A box with their precious stuff: I think that to preserve memories of the past, is a really useful exercise for learning to appreciate the single moment of our life, even the ones that in the present appear less important. In your opinion, what‘s missing today in the world of children? Time to be really listened by adults. Do you have a project for the little ones in mind or have you already carried out one for them? Beyond my activity where I’m always projecting for them, right now I’m designing a place where they can dream and think while playing!

We are two philosophers (Ilaria Rodella and Francesco Mapelli, ndr) who design original and engaging experiences and content with the aim of generating critical thinking, awareness and creativity in children and adults. We use tools and methodologies derived from philosophy and art teaching. Our work takes inspiration from historic heritage, music, film, digital manufacturing, colours, leaves, buildings, factories and, most of all, from other people. We make you think while doing, making the invisible visible. Our partners: we work together with important museums (The Guggenheim Venice, Mart in Trento and Rovereto, Mambo in Bologna, the Museo Poldi Pezzoli in Milan, the Museo di Scienza e della Tecnica), with leading festivals (Festivaletteratura in Mantua, the Festival della Mente in Sarzana) and with companies (Corraini Edizioni). We have developed projects for schools, libraries, public institutions and private companies throughout Italy. We organise the “Stati Generali Filosofia Bambini” with UNESCO support, the family-based philosophy festival “A Spasso con Sofia” in Milano and il Mese della filosofia, contemporaneously in Milan, Naples and Vicenza).
